The following are the scheduled topics for future issues of White Crane. In an effort to remain as topical as a quarterly publication can be, the order of this schedule may be changed so that we may be responsive to the "zeitgeist."

Fall 2009
Freethought
We honor the lives of those who follow a humanist, agnostic or atheist path in life. What is the place of reason in life and how does one construct a life without the need for certainty about or belief in a God.

Deadline for Fall 2009:
August 1, 2009

Winter 2009:

Fathers
We invite an exploration of our relationship with fathers. How are we fathered? How do we father? Conflict and resonance? The man who set a role we rebelled from or grew to resemble? Tell us your story of Father.

Deadline for Winter 2009:
November 1, 2009

Spring 2010:

Writer's Guidelines for White Crane

White Crane is committed to the certainty that Gay consciousness plays an integral and unique role in the evolution of life on Earth. We explore and document the variety of the manifestations of the spiritual search among contemporary Gay men.

We are a journal. A "journal" in the sense of both the small private book that you write your thoughts and experiences in every day, as well as a record of philosophical, academic and scholarly thought. As such, we are most interested in personal stories, personal journeys and personal discovery. We are equally interested in submissions by academics doing work in GLBT studies. We are interested in all perspectives and backgrounds and seek to present the broadest possible collection of ideas as exist.

We are descriptive, not prescriptive. We prefer personal statements to universal statements. We prefer “I” statements spoken from the heart to generalized declarations of “how things are.” We come from a tradition of sharing of these stories in a circle and believe in honoring personal experience as it reflects how the world is for you, your “individual light.” It bears repeating that we would like to describe and record the diversity of experiences and take pride in our ability to coexist while we may disagree, sometimes profoundly. The world clearly needs a model of this, now, more than anything.

For work by scholars, please include your affiliations if possible and other credentials that might be important to our readers. We appreciate a bibliography, but footnotes are not necessary. We prefer references to be contained in the body of the article.

Our understanding of “spiritual” is directly related to the Greek term “eros” or life force. As such we are interested in the erotic as it moves us beyond the pleasurable, beyond the altered state of consciousness, beyond the personal healing, beyond the mystical to the truly deeper experience—expanding ones ability to be whole, generous, and loving, and enriching and grounding one’s relationship with self, others, and the environment. Any and all subjects, therefore, can fall within this purview of “spiritual.”

We want your stories, your essays, your poems, your artwork, and your book reviews.

We invite you to add your voice to the conversation.

Length of the contributions We prefer articles (essays) to be between 1500 to 2500 words in length. We will consider shorter and longer pieces for inclusion in an issue. Most articles run about 1500 words. If the submission is related to the topic we will be more likely to consider it for inclusion in White Crane. We are trying to fit in as many articles and perspectives as space will allow, so we have a preference for more tightly written pieces.
