 The
prize is named after the Gay American poet James L. White.
White was the author of four books of poetry:
Divorce Proceedings (1972),
Crow's Story of Deer (1974),
Del Rio Hotel (1975)
The Salt Ecstacies (1982)
[recently reissued by Graywolf Press]
White was also the editor of three anthologies of Native American
writing including Time of the Indian (1976) and First
Skin Around Me (1976).
White was a poet-teacher with the Navajo in the American Southwest
and worked with Allen Ginsberg at the Jack Kerouac School of
Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder Colorado.
White died of heart disease in 1981 at the age of 45.
